A washing machine was destroyed in an explosion after a woman in Sydney sprayed a spider which ran under the appliance on Saturday afternoon.

AAP reports the incident began when the woman spotted a spider on the washing machine in her home in Kirribilli, at about 1pm (AEDT).

She sprayed the spider with insecticide and it ran under the machine. Then the woman sprayed under the washing machine and the appliance exploded.

The blast blew out the kitchen and bathroom windows and destroyed the washing machine.

Fire Service investigators believe the motor of the washing machine ignited the insect spray, triggering the explosion.

The woman was treated at the scene for blurred vision and singed hair.

Police said there was no sign of the spider.
