Tug-of-war rips off fingers

10:47 pm on 6 February 2013

A school tug-of-war that went horribly wrong in California has left two students with missing fingers.

The pair, a girl and a boy, are said to be in stable condition in hospital after the lunchtime accident at El Monte Union High School.

Witnesses said they had their hands caught in the rope when it suddenly snapped and ripped off their fingers.

Both have had surgery to re-attach the fingers but it's not yet known how successful that has been, or how many fingers were lost.
