Bangladesh ferry sinks, 40 missing

11:06 pm on 8 February 2013

A ferry carrying about 100 people has sunk in a river near the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, with up to 40 people still missing.

Dozens of people were rescued or swam to shore after the MV Sarosh went down in the Meghna River.

It had been travelling from Dhaka to Chandpur district and went down as it was passing through Munshiganj, about 30km south of Dhaka, the BBC reports.

Ferry accidents are common on Bangladesh's vast river network and scores of people are killed every year.

Boats are the main form of travel in many rural parts of the country.

In March last year, more than 112 people died when a ferry on the wide and fast-moving Meghna River collided with an oil tanker and sank.
