5000 leaving Syria each day - UN

The United Nations refugee agency says about 5000 refugees are fleeing Syria each day, seeking safe haven in neighbouring countries.

The agency says there was a huge increase in January alone - when the number of registered refugees rose 25% over a single month.

Since the conflict began two years ago, more than 787,000 Syrians have registered as refugees or are awaiting processing in the region.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has requested $US1.5 billion from donors to help the growing number of Syrian refugees.

UN Children's Fund spokesperson Marixie Mercado says the situation for homeless people inside Syria is deteriorating by the day.

She says living conditions are unsanitary with too few toilets, showers and basic hygiene products like soap.

Ms Mercado says in some shelters up to 70 people share a single toilet.

She says water is rationed often in amounts of less than 10 litres per person per day.
