UK horsemeat scandal spreads to France and Sweden

A scandal in the United Kingdom over beef products found to contain horsemeat has spread to France and Sweden.

The BBC reports that lasagne, shepherd's pie and moussaka ready-meals, made by the food manufacturer Findus, have been withdrawn from French supermarkets.

A spokesperson for Findus in Sweden says 20,000 meals were being taken off the shelves there after tests showed they may contain between 60 and 100% horsemeat.

Tesco and Aldi have also had to withdraw food products.

The UK Food Safety Authority said it was "highly likely" criminal activity was to blame for the contamination.
