Quake in central Chile

9:52 am on 11 February 2013

A magnitude 5.7 quake occurred in central Chile on Sunday, causing buildings to sway in the capital of Santiago.

The US Geological Survey said it was centred 35km southwest of Valparaiso at a depth of 35km.

The Navy has downplayed the possibility of a tsunami and no major damage has been reported.

Southern Chile was ravaged by a magnitude 8.8 quake and ensuing tsunamis in February 2010, which led to a state of catastrophe being declared.
