A reward of $US1 million is being offered in California for information leading to the arrest of a fugitive ex-policeman suspected of three murders.
Christopher Dorner, 33, has been the subject of a manhunt for the past week.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said on Sunday his "reign of terror" must end.
The LA Police Department fired the former naval officer in 2009 after finding he falsely accused his training officer of using excessive force on a mentally ill man.
In an online manifesto, Dorner blamed racism and corruption in the department for his removal and declared war on certain members of the LAPD and their families.
Police are now protecting 50 families.
The search for Dorner is concentrated on an area near Big Bear Lake, 130km east of Los Angeles, where his burned-out truck was found near a ski area.
