The most detailed pictures ever taken of the planet Mercury are prompting scientists to rethink its origins.

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, but it's now thought that may not have always been the case.

The BBC reports that for centuries, astonomers have seen the planet as a dull featureless rock. but the images show it's more interesting than anyone ever imagined.

One view is that Mercury may have formed further out and drifted in an orbit close to the sun.
