South Korea's Jiyai Shin has won the Australian women's open golf tournament in Canberra, holding off her two closest contenders, Yani Tseng of Taiwan, and New Zealand teenager, Lydia Ko.

AAP reports that Shin completed the LPGA tournament at Royal Canberra 18-under par, two shots clear of the world number one, Tseng, and four shots ahead of 15-year-old Ko.

Ko was bidding to become the youngest player to win the title by three years.

But the young New Zealander could not sustain her challenge against two of the sport's biggest names and finished an admirable third.
