Leaders of 11 countries in the Great Lakes region of Africa have signed a deal to end fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The deal, which was mediated by the United Nations, aims to end a conflict between M23 rebels and the government in the east of the country.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in Addis Ababa that he hoped it would bring "an era of peace and stability" to the region.

Representatatives from Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Republic and South Sudan attended the signing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

An earlier attempt to reach a deal collapsed in December after President Joseph Kabila was accused of failing to honour a deal to integrate rebels into the army. The M23 rebellion began in May.
