Power blackout in Pakistan

12:57 pm on 25 February 2013

Pakistan had a nationwide blackout for more than two hours on Sunday night when a plant breakdown caused power stations across the country to stop working.

A water and power ministry official said a technical fault at the plant in south-western Baluchistan province had a cascading effect.

Another ministry official said all 24 power stations in the capital Islamabad are working again and electricity is being restored in parts of all four provinces.

Power cuts are common in Pakistan, but nationwide outages are rare.
