Woman on top of Everest twice

Updated at 9:28 am on 26 February 2013

A Nepalese climber has been confirmed as the first woman to climb Mount Everest twice in a single season.

Guinness World Records said Chhurim Sherpa, 29, reached the summit on 12 May last year before returning to base camp for a rest and repeated the feat a week later.

About 3000 people have made it to the top of Everest since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay conquered it in 1953.

That number includes 21 Nepalese women, but no female climber had ever managed two ascents in one season before Chhurim Sherpa.
