Eight people are in hospital in Sydney after a balcony collapsed beneath them during dinner.

Rescue crews and paramedics were called to a duplex on the Pacific Highway, in the northern suburb of Lane Cove, just after 10pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.

NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman Ian Krimmer told AAP 11 people were dining on the balcony when it collapsed. They fell seven metres.

AAP reports 30 emergency services personnel took a long time to manoeuvre the injured out of the rubble.

"The cause of the incident is yet to be investigated," Superintendent Krimmer said.

Eight people were taken to hospital, including five with serious injuries.
