Venezuelan election date set

2:50 pm on 10 March 2013

A date has been set for a presidential election to replace the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

The BBC reports the country's electoral commission says the poll will be held on 14 April.

The announcement follows the appointment of Mr Chavez's favoured successor, Nicolas Maduro, as acting president.

Mr Maduro will run as the governing party candidate with Henrique Capriles expected to stand for the opposition.

Mr Chavez died last week after a long battle with cancer.
