A 39-year-old Swiss woman has been gang-raped and her husband assaulted in India, police say.
The couple were camping near a village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. They had been travelling by bicycle from the temple town of Orchha to Seonda.
Eight men attacked them with sticks, beat up and overpowered the husband and raped the woman, according to a police complaint made by the husband. They stole the couple's belongings.
The woman had been admitted to a hospital, with preliminary tests confirming she had been raped, a local news channel reported.
Eight people have been detained for questioning, DPA reports.
A total of 24,206 cases of rape were reported in India in 2011, according to the latest government data.
