Italian leader to hold new talks with parties

Italy's president Giorgio Napolitano will hold a new round of talks with political parties on Friday to try to form a government after inconclusive elections in February.

The statement from the president's office came after centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani said on Thursday that his week-long attempt to find cross-party support for an administration had not produced results, Reuters reports.

The talks would begin in Rome with Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party and end with Mr Bersani's Democratic party on Friday evening, a spokesperson for the president said.
