A day of national mourning has been declared on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, after 11 people died in severe floods.

Torrential rain hit the island's capital Port Louis on Saturday night local time.

A BBC reporter in the city says water levels have now receded but many buildings including the main hospital have been flooded.

Residents report shortages of food, water and electricity.
