Arrests follow fatal building collapse

1:51 pm on 8 April 2013

Two builders and several public officials have been arrested in Mumbai since the collapse of a seven-storey building last Thursday night in which almost 80 people died.

The building was constructed in 45 days. It was located in Thane - an area where hundreds of other buildings have been built illegally.

Demolition of a number of illegally constructed buildings has begun in Mumbai and the state government of Maharashtra has vowed to crack down on illegal construction.

The ABC reports the collapse has highlighted poor building standards in India, where huge demand for housing and pervasive corruption means cost-cutting often occurs and safety inspections are not carried out.
