Lifetime election ban imposed on Musharraf

A court in Pakistan has imposed a lifetime election ban on former military ruler Pervez Musharraf who is under house arrest.

The High Court in Peshawar made the ruling after dismissing an appeal by General Musharraf against an earlier disqualification to contest parliamentary elections in May.

It said he had forfeited the right to stand because he sacked and detained judges while president and twice breached the terms of the constitution.

Mr Musharraf said the ban is politically motivated. He returned last month from self imposed exile to contest elections to be held on 11 May.
