Rhode Island has become the 10th American state to allow same-sex marriage.

Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee signed the bill into law shortly after its final approval by the state legislature on Thursday.

Hundreds of gay rights activists celebrated the move in the capital, Providence, by holding a victory party.

The first weddings are due to take place on 1 August this year, when the law takes effect.

Rhode Island is the last state in the New England region to sanction gay marriage.
