A boy in Queensland is in hospital after his hands were ripped apart by a homemade backyard bomb.

Police say a group of youths aged between 15 - 21 were playing behind a house in Dampier Street in Leichhardt, west of Brisbane, when the device, the size of a golf ball, exploded just after 2pm (AEST) on Friday.

Neighbours called police when they heard the explosion.

The boy, 15, was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious injuries to his chest and both hands.

The ABC reports he had surgery overnight and is now in a stable condition.

Some of the other youths were found at a shopping centre nearby and were taken to Ipswich hospital with minor injuries.
