Federal prosecutors in Texas have arrested a paramedic who helped in the response to a fatal fertiliser explosion in the town of West.

Bryce Reed, 31, appeared at federal court in Waco, Texas, on Friday, charged with unlawful possession of pipe bomb components. He did not enter a plea.

The BBC reports 14 people were killed and about 200 injured in the huge explosion at the fertiliser factory on 17 April. Dozens of houses were demolished, a nursing home was damaged and an apartment complex was wrecked.

However, police said there was no known connection between the charge and the explosion.

"No evidence has been uncovered to indicate any connection to the events surrounding the fire and subsequent explosion at the West fertilizer plant and the arrest," the McLennan County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
