China urges tourists to behave

A senior Communist Party official in China has called for Chinese tourists to behave more politely when travelling abroad.

Wang Yang, who is one of four vice prime ministers, said the uncivilised behaviour of some Chinese tourists is harming the country's image.

Mr Wang's words were published on the website of The People's Daily, the Communist Party's main newspaper.

Among the vices he singled out were talking loudly in public places and spitting.

Chinese tourists spent $US102 billion (overseas last year, up 40% on the year before, as foreign travel becomes ever more popular.

A BBC correspondent reports Mr Wang's criticism has brought a mixed response on Weibo, the domestic version of Twitter.

"It's time to send a warning to ourselves," one user posted. "As Chinese people get richer, our behaviour gets worse."

But many in China say they are treated like second-class citizens when they travel abroad.
