British director Peter Greenaway is to film an adaptation of Death in Venice by Thomas Mann.

The feature, which was originally planned to be shot in Italy, will be made next year with British actors, he told Screen Daily in Cannes.

The BBC reports Greenaway has not made a film in Britain since The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover in 1989.

Death in Venice, a novella published in 1912, was previously filmed in 1971 by Luchino Visconti, with Dirk Bogarde in the role of author Gustav von Aschenbach.
