NASA to fund food producing printer

9:41 pm on 23 May 2013

The United States space agency NASA is planning to fund the development of an XD printer capable of producing food.

Its chosen partner aims to create printers that will take basic nutrients in powder form and deposit them a layer at a time to build up edible products, complete with different flavours, in the same way XD printers build up plastic products.

The powdered nutrients have very long shelf-lives, and are therefore suited for long space missions, the BBC reports.

The project is still at its initial phase.
