Protests rage in Turkey

9:42 pm on 1 June 2013

Protests in Turkey's main city Istanbul are growing against plans to turn a park at Taksim Square into a shopping centre.

Thousands of people are crossing a bridge from the Asian side of the city to join the crowds still on the streets after a night of unrest.

More than a hundred people were injured on Friday as the security forces tried to drive back demonstrators with tear gas and water cannon.

The BBC's reports that what began as a local issue has spiralled into more widespread anger at the government and ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party.
