ALP heading for wipeout in Australian election

5:43 am on 4 June 2013

The latest opinion poll in Australia shows the Labor government of Julia Gillard is headed for a devastating defeat in September's general election.

The Newspoll, published in The Australian newspaper, shows the Coalition's primary vote is up by three points to 49% compared with Labor's 30%.

After preferences are distributed, the ABC reports that translates to a lead of 58% to 42%.

Based on preference flows at the last election, Labor would lose 35 seats including those held by senior ministers including Treasurer Wayne Swan and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus.

Tony Abbott is now the preferred prime minister by 43% of voters, while Ms Gillard is 35%.

Polling in Queensland is believed to show the primary vote for Mr Swan collapsing to 28% compared to 41% at the last election.

The ABC reports a "worst-case" scenario indicates former prime minister Kevin Rudd could be Labor's last man standing in Queensland.
