States say refugee health costs rising

Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are tired of the soaring cost of health care for asylum seekers and refugees. They want the federal government to share the burden.

The Australian reports they will demand a better funding deal at a ministerial council meeting on Friday.

They want the federal government to meet increased costs for basic services, including immunisations, mental health and dental services.

Victorian Health Minister David Davis told the paper his state was prepared to help asylum seekers, but the Commonwealth needed to contribute to the cost.

AAP reports the ministers will also debate whether all asylum seekers not in detention should be eligible for Medicare.
