The Indian government is considering convening a special session of parliament to pass a landmark law aimed at providing subsidised food to two-thirds of the population.

The BBC reports the Food Security Bill would ensure 800 million people are able to buy 5kg of cheap grain every month.

But critics say the plan is a political move to gain votes and will drain India's finances.
