10:42 am on 3 July 2009

New Zealand has been beaten in a shearing Test by Scotland at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh.

The loss was the first in Test shearing in the Northern Hemisphere in almost two years.

John Kirkpatrick, of Napier, and James Fagan, from Te Kuiti, were beaten by New Zealand-based 2008 UK circuit champion Gavin Mutch and reigning Scottish national champion Hamish Mitchell.

Cheviot sheep were used for the contest.

The second Test will be held this weekend at the Lochearnhead Shears.
