An American journalist who wrote an article that led to the dismissal of the commander of United States forces in Afghanistan has been killed in a car crash.

Michael Hastings, 33, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles after his vehicle hit a tree and caught fire.

The BBC reports he was best known for a profile of General Stanley McChrystal in Rolling Stone magazine in 2010.

General McChrystal was quoted as being openly critical of President Barack Obama in the article and was subsequently dismissed. McChrystal aides also mocked Vice President Joe Biden.

He was replaced in Afghanistan by General David Petraeus.
