Flood causes mass evacuations in Canada

9:00 pm on 21 June 2013

The authorities in western Canada say they are preparing to evacuate up to 100,000 people from their homes because of heavy flooding.

Officials in the city of Calgary say the evacuation would take place in stages in the next few days.

Torrential rain and flooding in Alberta province has washed away bridges and roads, while landslides have forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway, the BBC reports.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the affected areas, estimating as much as 100mm more rain could fall in the next two days.
