Man arrested over French Alps murders

Police investigating the murders of three members of a British-Iraqi family in the French Alps last year have arrested a man in England.

He is believed to be the brother of Saad al-Hilli, who was shot dead in his car, along with his wife and mother-in-law, while they were on holiday. Their daughters Zeinab and Zeena survived.

A passing cyclist was also killed.

Zeena, four, was discovered under her mother's body inside the family car, eight hours after the shooting.

Zainab, seven, had serious head injuries. She had been shot and beaten.

The motive for the attack is unclear.

THe BBC reports Zaid al-Hilli, 54, Saad's brother, was arrested at an address in Chessington, in Surrey. He had previously denied there was any feud between him and his brother.

Two judges in Annecy are investigating phone calls made to and from the home of Zaid al-Hilli in the three-week period before the family left for a holiday.

"We felt there were enough reasons to take him into custody,'' Annecy prosecutor Eric Maillaud told AFP.

"We need to ask him questions about his schedule, his relationship with his brother and the family inheritance."
