500th execution performed in Texas

Texas has executed its 500th inmate since the state reinstated the death penalty in 1982.

Former nursing home therapist Kimberly McCarthy, 52, was put to death by lethal injection on Thursday for the murder of an elderly neighbour during a robbery in 1997.

She was the first woman executed in the United States for nearly three years.

Texas is one of 32 states to still have the death penalty.

Since the US Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976, 40% of all executions have taken place there.

Despite growing opposition to the death penalty worldwide, Texans support it. The BBC reports a poll by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune last year found 73% of voters backed the punishment.
