McCain and Obama woo Christian voters

US presidential hopefuls Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama have been trying to woo Christian voters at a televised religious forum in California.

The two men shared a stage for the first time since securing nomination.

The forum hosted by evangelical pastor Rick Warren was an opportunity for both candidates to reach out to religious voters who will be a key voting bloc in the November election.

When each was asked about his greatest moral failing, Mr Obama cited his youthful experimentation with drugs and Mr McCain noted his failed first marriage.

Mr Obama said one of America's biggest moral failings involved its treatment of the poor.

As to America's moral failings, McCain said: "Perhaps we have not devoted ourselves to causes greater than our self-interest, although we've been the best at it."

Both candidates have struggled to garner support in the religious community.

Evangelicals account for one in four US adults and have been a significant conservative base for the Republican Party, with a strong focus on opposition to abortion and gay rights and the promotion of "traditional" family values.

Mr Obama said he supported a woman's right to have an abortion but wanted to work to reduce the number of such procedures, while McCain cited his opposition to abortion.
