Seven UN peacekeepers have been killed and 17 wounded in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The African Union-United Nations mission said the incident happened in an area patrolled by Tanzanian troops on Saturday.

UNAMID spokesman Christopher Cycmanick told AFP the incident happened as the troops were moving between the mission's base at Manawashi, north of Nyala, and another base at Khar Abeche.

The BBC reports UNAMID has more than 16,000 troops currently based in Darfur. The mission began in 2007.

Rebels in Darfur took up arms in 2003 against the government in Khartoum.
