7:37 am on 30 July 2013

A Qantas flight carrying 50 passengers had to land at Canberra airport on Monday after smoke was detected in the cockpit.

AAP reports all the passengers were safely evacuated after the aircraft landed at 12.45pm (AEST).

The pilot and co-pilot were taken to hospital for assessment before being released.

The aircraft, a Dash-8 Q300, was travelling from Sydney to Wagga Wagga when it was diverted to Canberra.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the incident. A report is expected to be released in October.
