Indian troops killed in Kashmir

9:18 am on 7 August 2013

Five Indian army soldiers have been killed in Kashmir along the Line of Control between India and Pakistan.

The Indian military has accused the Pakistani army of involvement. Pakistan denies that.

Defence Minister AK Antony told parliament that the government had lodged a strong protest with the government of Pakistan through diplomatic channels.

The BBC reports Kashmir has been a flashpoint for over 60 years. In January, several cross-border attacks caused the worst crisis in their relations in years.

The latest incident came as the two sides are preparing for peace talks, the first since a new government took office in Pakistan.

A statement issued by the ministry of defence said there had been 57 ceasefire violations by the Pakistani army this year.

A ceasefire was agreed along the line of control, which divides the region, in November 2003.
