Two home-made bombs were found at a school at Mackay in north Queensland on Monday morning, not far from where a boy was seriously hurt while playing with explosive household substances.
Inspector Andy Graham said one of the bombs was almost identical to the one that seriously injured a boy on Sunday at a house that backs onto Mackay State High School.
"Doctors are fighting to save his hand. He's lost a thumb and finger on the other hand," Inspector Graham told AAP. "He has shrapnel injuries to his body and shrapnel in his eye.
"It's a serious eye injury and he may be blinded (in that eye).''
AAP reports the boy, 15, was wrapping the device in tape when it exploded on Sunday. He underwent surgery in Mackay and has since been flown to a hospital in Brisbane for more surgery.
Another boy, 14, was in another room when the device went off. He was not hurt.
Inspector Graham said the two devices found at the school had already been detonated before they were discovered by a teacher.
AAP reports no further bombs have been found.
