Peace talks off after three shot dead

10:38 am on 27 August 2013

Palestinian peace negotiators have called off a planned meeting with their Israeli counterparts after Israeli security forces shot dead three Palestinians during clashes in the West Bank.

Nineteen Palestinians were wounded in the operation at the Qalandiya refugee camp between Ramallah and East Jerusalem in the West Bank.

Israel says the raid was targetting a militant. Israeli officials say hundreds of Palestinians started throwing firebombs and concrete blocks at Israeli officers in the street who responded with riot equipment.

A Palestinian official says the peace talks, which formally resumed this month after a pause of nearly three years, have been postponed as a result, the BBC reports.

The talks had been due to take place on Monday. A date for a new meeting has not been set.
