Broccoli could help prevent onset of osteoarthritis

Researchers in England say eating broccoli could help prevent the onset or development of osteoarthritis.

They have found that a compound called sulforaphane - found mainly in broccoli, but also brussels sprouts and cabbage - may slow the destruction of cartilage in the joints.

Professor Ian Clark of Norwich University said the team has seen positive tests in the cartilage cells and tissues of mice, but they want to see if it works in humans.

Arthritis Research UK says if the findings were replicated in humans, it would be a breakthrough, as research has so far failed to show diet can help reduce the progression of the disease.
