Quake shakes southern Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has jolted southern Japan, shaking buildings in the capital, Tokyo.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake was centred deep underground about 580 km south of Tokyo.

Witnesses say it was felt along much of Japan's east coast.
