Bushfires sweep Sydney's west

12:09 am on 11 September 2013

Seven firefighters have been injured, suffering smoke inhalation and minor burns, and two houses have been destroyed in bushfires around Sydney.

About 800 firefighters were deployed on Tuesday to battle the fires that destroyed two houses at Marsden Park and Winmalee, as well as cars, sheds and other property, the ABC reports.

Other homes were threatened by fires sweeping through parts of Sydney's west and northwest and into the lower Blue Mountains, fanned by strong winds and high temperatures.

Rural fire authorities says the threat is easing in Sydney, with all four emergency warnings downgraded at Castlereagh, Marsden Park, Windsor and Winmalee.

Deputy rural fire commissioner Rob Rogers says an investigation is underway into the fires, including a hazard reduction burn at Winmalee earlier in the week.

About 20 fires in total have been burning on the New South Wales east coast.
