Acapulco - Mexico City highway now partly open

12:32 pm on 21 September 2013

The main motorway between Acapulco and Mexico City is now partly open.

The highway had been closed since Monday, when Tropical Storm Manuel caused floods and mudslides.

The BBC reports at least 600 buses are going to ferry an estimated 22,000 tourists who are stranded at the resort, to the capital.

An airlift is already in place, but the opening of the road is expected to speed up the operation.

About 100 people were killed by storms that hit the country on Monday. The BBC reports nearly 70 people are missing in one village on the Pacific coast.
