Kenya says mall militants defeated

4:01 pm on 25 September 2013

Kenya's president has told his country that security forces have defeated the militants who attacked a Nairobi shopping mall and held out there for four days.

The raid killed at least 67 civilians and security personnel and more bodies are still trapped under rubble following the collapse of part of the building.

Foreign forensic experts have joined Kenyan teams at the Westgate centre to help recover those bodies and to establish the identities of the attackers, the BBC reports.

In a televised address, President Uhuru Kenyatta said five militants have been killed and 11 are in custody.

"Kenya has stared down evil and triumphed," he said.

Kenya has now begun three days of national mourning called by Mr Kenyatta.

It remained unclear after Mr Kenyatta's address whether the four-day security operation at the upmarket Westgate centre was completely over, or whether any militants were still at large or hostages unaccounted for, Reuters reports.

However, Kenyan police later said all those who stormed the mall were either dead or in custody.

Mr Kenyatta added that he could not confirm intelligence reports that a British woman and two or three Americans might be involved.

Forensic scientists are involved in trying to identify the nationalities of the "terrorists", he said.
