Peru quake crumbles houses

7:34 am on 26 September 2013

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off Peru's southern coast and there are reports of homes crumbling.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicentre of the earthquake, which was 46 km deep, was close to Peru's southern Arequipa region.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths, but a local official reported structural damage in the province of Caraveli in Arequipa, Reuters reports.

The quake shook buildings in the capital Lima 500 km away, Reuters witnesses said.

Chile's national emergency service said the quake was also felt in the north of the country but no damage was reported.
