Turks begin constructing wall on Turkish-Syrian border

Turkish officials have started building a wall along part of the country's border with Syria.

The border region has been the site of incidents of fighters from Syria clashing on Turkish territory.

Officials say the aim of the project is to boost security and prevent smuggling.

The Nusaybin municipality has told the BBC that the Turkish military has begun to dig a 300-metre long trench along the border with Syria.

The trench is expected to provide the foundation for a wall and Turkish media suggests that this wall will be two metres high.

Its final length is not yet clear, but for now at least, it will cover only a very small part of the country's 900-kilometre long border with Syria.
