Anger over lenient rape sentence in Kenya

11:57 am on 29 October 2013

More than a million people in Kenya have signed a petition demanding justice after three men accused of brutally raping a schoolgirl were ordered to cut grass as punishment.

The ferocious attack and lack of action against those who carried it out has sparked outrage, AFP reports.

The 16-year old was reportedly beaten and raped by six men in western Kenya, then dumped, bleeding and unconscious, in a sewage ditch.

The victim knew some of the attackers and three were taken by villagers to the police station.

The men were ordered to cut grass around the camp then set free.

The girl is now wheelchair-bound with a broken back.

Lawmakers have condemned the attack and police failures, ordering action to be taken.
