A slavery drama and a con-artist caper lead the Golden Globe Awards with seven nominations each.

Twelve Years a Slave and American Hustle were the frontrunners in the nominations announced on Thursday.

Space thriller Gravity and a drama about Somali piracy, Captain Phillips, are also nominated.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett received a best actress for her role as a socialite fallen on hard times in Blue Jasmine.

Other nominees included Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr Banks and Kate Winslet for Labor Day.

The ABC reports Blanchett also received a Screen Actor's Guild nomination on Wednesday for the same role.

The Golden Globes will be awarded on 12 January, a few days before the nominations for the Academy Awards.

In television, Golden Globe nominations highlighted some new and edgy shows, like the history of sexual study in Masters of Sex and political thriller House of Cards, both nominated for best drama.
