Cyclone hits Western Australia

7:11 pm on 31 December 2013

Residents in the Western Australia Pilbara region remain on high alert as authorities assess the damage from a tropical cyclone which has battered the coast.

Cyclone Christine dumped more than 100 millimetres of rain in some areas, with wind gusts of at least 170km/h.

The category 3 cyclone crossed the Pilbara coast between Karratha and Port Hedland on Tuesday morning, cutting power about 7000 customers.

Most communities in the area remain on alert, but the storm has been downgraded to a category 2 cyclone and was tracking inland on Tuesday night.

The State Emergency Service has received more than 40 calls for help, the ABC reports.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned tides may rise significantly above normal high tide along the coast between Pardoo and Wickham, including Port Hedland, on Tuesday.

A number of cyclone evacuation centres have been set up around the Pilbara.
